Earth Hour 2010: Darth Vader helps WWF to save the planet

2010
03.09

For the Earth Hour 2010, WWF Belgium organizes an innovating and unexpected campaign based on the dark side! With its help, they expect to gather a billion people and 90 states around the world on Saturday 27 March 2010 at 8:30pm during 1 hour.  A new record in the offing!

This video, from Gremaine agency and Pimpz, recreates Darth Vader in a funny and unconventional earth hero. Who could have expected that from one of the most famous bad guy. Darth Vader becomes a misunderstood person with image problems. He also promotes the fact that sometimes some darkness is not a bad thing, especially against global warming.

It is a really good campaign, due to the combination of three factors: humor, famous cultural character and social networks. With the use of humor and Darth Vader to reach a young audience and fans, a website and a large promotion through social networks, such as Twitter, Facebook and Flickr, this campaing has all the tools to achieve its goals.

So don’t forget to join the movement and to turn off your lights on Saturday 27 March 2010 at 8:30pm!

Sidaction: 2010 fundraising Campaign

2010
03.08

This year the French organization Sidaction is doing its annual fundraising campaign (March 3 to April 11) on the theme: Research. They created a dynamic online donation page which answer the usual question « what is happening with my donation?« :

On this donation page you can see researchers on surveillance videotapes, which is innovative and really positive for a fundraising strategy. You put donors at rest in showing them how their money is used and putting them in a « supervisors » position. By answering your donors’ questions and fears through an unexpected fundraising campaign, you will increase your chances to raise funds and maybe to gain permanent donors.

The Sidaction’s campaign is promoted  with a video from Leo Burnett, reminding us that we can prevent AIDS but we need research to fight it and for that they need our donations:

So to help the fight against AIDS, don’t be afraid, donate !

WFP: International Women’s Day 2010 campaign

2010
03.08

For this International Women’s Day March 8, I want to share with you a nice solidarity campaign created by World Food Programme to remind us that empowering women can break the cycle of hunger and poverty:

They have made an interesting images selection. In the first part of the video, they show us strong and smiling women working hard in fields and offices. However, in the second part we can see children, because public opinion considers them as the most fragile and intolerable victims and it serves the video demonstration. So this second part is oriented to women and children fragility. But in the same time we can observe that women are the ones who take care of the most vulnerable.
They combined those women and children images with written texts, really well integrated, and a melodramatic music. Through the texts, they demonstrate through numbers and percentages the main role of women in the agricultural field and more largely their major place in economy. In opposition, they tell us how women and children are vulnerable to poverty, hunger, violence and rape. WFP conclude its argumentation with this final sentence « Women: the frontline against hunger« .

Even if it’s a usual video montage in nonprofit communication, they remind us that being a woman is not an easy « job » and even if women are strong, there is still a lot to do to protect them.

And to conclude, I wish all women a happy women’s day!

A credit card in fundraising strategy

2010
03.07

Another interesting use of social media for fundraising in France!
Credit Cooperatif creates a new « donor credit card »; each time you buy something with it you give 5 cents to your association in the partner list (Action Against Anger France, Aide et Action, AIDES, Fondation Energies pour le Monde, France Nature Environnement, Médecins du Monde, SOS Villages d’Enfants, Surfrider Foundation, Terre & Humanisme et Unapei).

To promote this card, they created a video posted on you tube, asking you what you can buy with 5 cents (each time someone watch it, 5 cents are donated to the associations):

As we can see we can’t buy anything with 5 cents. So this clip is a good way to convince people to be part of this adventure. Moreover, when you withdraw some cash with this card the bank gives to your association. It is also a real interesting partnership for nonprofit organisations because they gain permanent donors.

It is another intelligent use of social media in a fundraising strategy. They based their campaign on two different phenomenons: social media and a simple donor act part of our daily life. It is two major tendencies in fundraising strategies, which can let us see a real adaptation to the society evolution and the new economic context.

UNICEF-USA : Stand With Haiti campaign

2010
03.05

Due to the rainy season in the country, where more than 1 million people are homeless and exposed to the elements, Haiti still need our support. UNICEF-USA organizes a campaign to « Stand With Haiti« .
They created a video in which they remind us stories of children that they have told since the quake. It is not the usual sad stories to make us cry but more a reflection of what happened to children; drama, hope and also happy ending.

They based their campaign on a simple act: taking a picture of you with a note saying that you « Stand With Haiti » and sending it THERE. This way of support is based on how people use internet and especially social networks; taking and uploading pictures of themselves. The most interesting point of their campaign is that they show that you can support a cause without paying but in standing for it. It is more enhancive for people because they are not only anonym giving money but a real person who stands for what he believes.

An ad against self-medication

2010
03.01

I found an interesting ad against self-medication on adsoftheworld.com:

It was created by R&P Advertising and media Communication in New Mumbai for Patil Hospital, which provides excellent health care at an affordable cost in Mumbai, India. The subject is interesting due to the fact that self-medication issue is not only present in India, but also in European and North-American countries. Ask questions or this kind of visual are quite common in nonprofit campaigns for pills or access to treatments, like the one from MSF-USA: a two section mail-in postcard (could tear into two pieces) that could be mailed to show support for the MSF Access to Essential Medicines Campaign in the USA :

However there are good ideas in this print, which can be discussed concerning the visual choice or the fact that people can reply “yes” to the question. Actually many people think that their doctor is not good enough or that it’s a minor disease that they can treat by themselves. So it was maybe not the best option to convince them to go to a doctor to be properly treated.
