Polio Awareness: the big question

2010
04.24

Just a little note to share with you this great awareness campaign about Polio from CCBT India:

It is just one question « How will your child’s life be without a polio dose? Something like this » and a sign that they have reinvented to transmit their message. This is a really good idea and example of how to be simple and have a strong impact.

Earth Day – April 22, 2010

2010
04.22

Today is Earth Day and there is a lot of events all around the world to promote environment. I am going to present you some of them happening today and the following days for this 40th edition.

- Earth Day organizer choose Rabat, Morocco among 6 cities in the world (Washington, New York, Rome, Shanghai and Mumbai) to be the first city of the day and proclaim it “green city”. Festivals, concerts, exhibitions and many events will take place on this day.

- The French association, Planete Urgence created a website, named mon arbre ma tibu (my tree, my tribe) in which you can design and plant your own tree, learn about their objectives, etc. To plant a tree it is only 1 euro. The interesting thing in this initiative is that they encourage people to act and decide what they are going to do with their donation in choosing which tree and where they want to plant it. So it is a good answer to the question « where goes my money? ». Moreover it is fun, interactive and a cheap donation. Good job!

- On April 24th, Million Tree NYC Association will organize a planting day in several parks in NYC:

Bronx Pehlam: Bay Park: Hunter Island
Raoul Wallenberg Forest

Brooklyn: Gateway NRA: Floyd Bennett Fiel
Spring Creek Park

Queens: Roy Wilkins Park

Staten Island: Ocean Breeze Park
Clove Lakes Park
Wolfe’s Pond Park

- On April 25th, The Earth Day CLIMATE RALLY will take place at National Mall, Washington DC.

Earth Day Network will organize this massive climate rally to demand Congress pass strong legislation. The Climate Rally will include notable speakers Reverend Jesse Jackson, film director, James Cameron, AFL-CIO President, Richard Trumka, Olympic gold medalist, Billy Demong, producer, Trudie Styler, author, Margaret Atwood, NFL player and television personality, Dhani Jones, environmental photographer Sebastian Copeland and many more.
The Climate Rally will also feature live music from Sting, John Legend, The Roots, Jimmy Cliff, Passion Pit, Bob Weir, Willie Colón, Joss Stone, Robert Randolph, Patrick Stump, Mavis Staples, Booker T, Honor Society and Tao Rodriguez-Seeger.

SAMU SOCIAL: Be a homeless for 24h

2010
04.20

This is one of the best idea I have seen recently! The concept of this awareness campaign « The street, Easy to enter, Hard to escape » is to make people understand what is like to be a homeless. SAMU SOCIAL, a French association helping homeless, has just created a website in which you can be a homeless for 24h and see what he sees by the aid of a camera on his glasses. It is impressive !

And the best thing is that they adapt the video to the time you are watching it. So you know exactly what a homeless  can see at this time. Great campaign !

CCFD Terre Solidaire: stereotypes

2010
04.18

Here is a new print campaign from CCFD Terre Solidaire and created by Euro RSCG C&O, Paris, France:

In this campaign, we can see three prints with people from different areas and a note saying for example: “This is not a street child from Sao Paulo. This is a young woman who has started a cooperative. Poorer countries deserve more than our outdated stereotypes.”  What I like in this campaign is that they point a reality that sometimes we are not conscious of: stereotypes from northern countries. They based this awareness campaign on kind of draws/representations we could see during colonization time, strengthened by this hand writing typography.

Actually, we still have those stereotypes due to our history and reinforced by Media. We will surely need time to integrate in our perception of poor countries that there are local people helping their communities and successful local businessmen.

WWF: European Car Free Day

2010
04.12

Here is a print advertising campaign for a nice initiative. WWF was promoting European Car Free Day in September, 22 2009 for the European Mobility Week.

The good point of those prints is that they used a simple but powerful visual. They created a luxury chrome panda on the front mudguard, like the ones for sumptuousness cars as jaguar or Rolls Royce. They succeeded to promote bikes and transform them in a mode of transport that can’t be forgot or disavow. Moreover, the print’s message is really clear so they don’t need text to pass it on. Those ads are a great example of a good nonprofit communication campaign.

Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada: Get your butt seen.

2010
04.09

Many of us have already seen the video from Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada, part of the campaign: Get your butt seen!

What is interesting in this awareness campaign is that they used a situation that people usually do for fun. In this short video they just said that some people photocopy their butt for fun and so don’t be ashamed of showing yours because it can save your life!

Here are the prints which I really like because they added diversity with men and women butts and black/white images involved that everyone is concerned. The artistic direction of this project was really good and the visual choice really adapted to the subject. Nice Campaign!

Kate Orne – May Your Never Be Uncovered: The victims of Pakistan’s sex trade.

2010
04.02

I just discovered the work of an extraordinary photographer: Kate Orne. She worked on a subject that we are unaware of: The victims of Pakistan’s sex trade. She is the first photographer allowed in this little know sex-industry in Pakistan to document madams, prostitutes and trafficking victims. In our perception of Pakistan, we never include sex trade because we consider it incompatible with Islam. Moreover prostitution is forbidden under Islamic law. With the increase of extremists groups and Sharia Law in the region, those women risk severe and violent punishments, even death.

Young women from rural villages and refugee camps are sold to the brothels by human-traffickers. Girls born in the trade are forced to integrate it, them and their mother are illiterate and prostitutes so they have no opportunities. Moreover those women have to face rapes and abuses in their daily life, with no hope of protection from their madams and pimps. Those affected by HIV/AIDS prefer to hide their illness otherwise they are stigmatized. Even with awareness campaigns, it is the client who decides to use condoms or not.
